Jeans are an irreplaceable part of an average closet. So, whether you want to go for a casual or semi-formal look, just put on a pair of jeans! It’s super easy to complement outfits with denim and opt for your chosen look.

But initially, jeans were just marketed for men. As such, women’s jeans were an unknown concept, and for a while, men’s jeans were marketed to everyone. So, how did the idea of jeans evolve to create a market for women?

History

“Denim” was the term used for jeans back when they first appeared in the 16th century. The name was inspired by a sturdy fabric called “Serge de Nîmes”. Initially, denim was marketed for working-class men. The fabric claimed to be tough enough to handle work in the factory. Additionally, they were held together by copper rivets. Hence, brands decided the price after keeping the target audience in mind.

Women often tried denim in their homes, most notably for ranch work. Long skirts were not ideal while working long hours in the sun. As a result, men’s denim began to be increasingly used by women, and a new market was opening up.

The First Women’s Jeans

After years of wearing their husband and father’s jeans, women worldwide finally caught a break. In 1934, the first-ever pair of jeans exclusively meant for women was designed. This variation was still a far cry from the modern jeans because these were marketed for ranch work. But now, jeans have a new market. A lot of brands later capitalised on this popularity and introduced their own denim.

Present Form

The variety available in the market right now is vibrant! It makes you think if the first-ever women’s jeans really appeared less than 100 years ago.

And some common types can be seen below:

  • Straight leg: This is the most common type of jeans. In straight leg jeans, the width is consistent along the pant leg. The fit is a bit tighter on the thigh and looser along the calf and ankle.
  • Slim fit: They are generally tight around the waist and genital area and loosen up below the leg.
  • Boyfriend jeans: These are the most comfort-inducing jeans on the entire list. Boyfriend jeans are a little worn but provide more room than the other two mentioned.
  • Wide-cut: The wide-cut jeans have a wider cut leg than any of the jeans mentioned, especially at the thighs and bottom.

The Future

Brands are evolving, with a lot of funds being invested in research and development. So, as technology evolves, so will the types of jeans available and the target audience. For instance, plus-size jeans have seen a major boom in recent years. Not only does it not alienate a particular group from enjoying denim, but it also captures a new market. A lot of stores with dedicated sections have been opened.

Due to the industrial revolution, there has been a considerable shift in clothing trends. Multiple styles have been repurposed and are enjoying a new niche. As the fashion industry becomes more creative, new pairings will pop up. But jeans will adapt to this change and fulfil a new role if required. After all, this fabric survived the second world war.
