You have three options to choose from when it comes to tooth replacement. While the most common solutions are removable dentures and fixed dental bridges, many still prefer having dental implant surgery to fix their missing teeth.

What are dental implants?

Dental implant surgery is the process of replacing a missing tooth with a tooth made of metal. Like screws for artificial teeth, they function and look like a real tooth integrated into the bone structure. There are different types of dental implants, namely, endosteal or implant that is in the bone and subperiosteal or implant that rests on top of the jaw bone. Endosteal lasts longer than the latter, that’s why dental clinics prefer this type over the other.

What to expect during a dental implant procedure?

Are you getting ready for your dental implant surgery? As a trusted dental clinic in Maryville, TN, we give you an overview of what you can expect during and after the procedure:

·         Initial Evaluation

Like any other dental process, a dentist starts by evaluating your condition and seeing if you’re fit for dental implant surgery. This includes a comprehensive examination of your jawbone through X-rays, determining the type of implants you need, and matching the color of your teeth so the implants will look natural. During the evaluation, your dental specialists will also explain the medical conditions and medications before and after the surgery. How It Works at Online Medical Card.

·         Tooth Extraction

Many patients arrive for dental implant surgery with teeth still intact. Some dentists extract the teeth before the surgery, and some do this simultaneously as the implant insertion. You will be provided with anesthesia options to make the tooth extraction a breeze and not painful on your part. After this procedure, dental specialists advise not to blow your nose, smoke, spit excessively, or drink through a straw as these can create pain and a dry socket.

·         Dental Implant Insertion and Bone Grafting

When the jaw needs an extra bone, dentists do bone grafting by getting one from the parts away from the implant area. If this is the case, you need to let the bone heal first before undergoing surgery. The jawbone begins to grow around the implant once it is already inserted and becomes part of the natural gum line. This happens anywhere from 3-9 months after the implant.

·         Abutment Placement

The abutment connects the implant to your crown, and it is usually placed once the implant is already stable. Keeping it tightened will ensure it stays in place whenever you chew food or talk.

·         Adding the Permanent Crown

Your dentists will make an artificial tooth crown once your gums heal. You have an option to choose a removal or a permanent crown. Most people choose the removable so they can clean and replace it if needed.
